Our Mission

There are an astonishing number of people that have bowel cancer and don’t even realise. As a result, bowel cancer is one of the leading causes of death at every age above 25, with an increasing risk as you get older. Matt, Chris, and Cameron are going through Queensland trying to raise awareness and funds for bowel cancer

#Getyouralleychecked. Cameron lost his Uncle Troy in 2019 after a long 5 year battle with multiple forms of cancer, most years he does shave for a cure but hasn’t the last couple years and this year he wants to make up for the last couple with something big. Matt’s Grandmother passed away when he was 5 years old from bowel cancer and missed out on the opportunity to get to know his grandmother as he got older. Cancer is the one thing that everyone can agree on…it sucks, and has hurt many families and will continue to do so for a long time to come unless we do something about it. Getting screened is the first step, 99% of bowel cancer cases can be treated if detected early, however less than 50% of cases are detected early, so there are many people taking a massive risk by not getting screened when they should.

Given the main demographic of tenpin bowling, being 45 and over, which is often the time that people start thinking about getting screened for bowel cancer, as bowlers ourselves we thought we could raise awareness and funds through one of the things we love to do. We are going to 28 bowling alleys bowling 3 games each starting in our hometown Toowoomba then to Coolangatta and up the coast to Cairns and then into Mount Isa.

My name is Matthew Smith and I was born in Sunbury (VIC) and raised in Toowoomba (QLD)
I live a busy life with 2 young kids and working full time as an I.T Systems Engineer and have always been interested in music, and when I was a teenager, I started playing guitar. It quickly became one of my biggest passions in life.
In addition to music, I also enjoy playing Ten Pin bowling and have been playing since 1999. I find it to be a fun and relaxing way to unwind after a long day. Whenever I have free time, you can often find me at the local bowling alley, working on my game.
Unfortunately, I also have a personal connection to bowel cancer. My beloved grandmother Pearl passed away from this terrible disease when I was only 5 years old. I want to do everything I can to help prevent others from experiencing the same pain and loss that my family went through.
Through my love of music and bowling, I have found a way to combine my personal interests with my desire to make a difference.
Overall, I am passionate about making a positive impact in the world, whether it's through my hobbies or my advocacy work. I am grateful for the support of my friends and family as I continue to pursue my goals and honor my grandmother's memory.

Cameron Melano

Hi, my name is Cameron Melano and I love maths you guessed it I’m a nerd, I am currently studying Maths and Physics at the University of Southern Queensland so I can go on to become a high school maths and physics teacher. My passion for maths and physics came from my teachers enthusiasm for the subject and passed it onto me and I really want to be able to give other teenagers the same experience that I had, and show how much of a difference the teacher makes in a kid’s learning experience. Unfortunately we all have a story about cancer and mine is my Uncle Troy, he was diagnosed when I was in grade 5 and was declared terminal when I was in grade 8 even though the doctors only gave him a few months to live he didn’t want to give up, specialist doctors from around the world were helping him and brainstorming of ways to help and for a little while he was cancer free but sadly it came back again and again, only getting worse each time. When I was in grade 11 I did shave for a cure and relay for life to show to him how much I supported him and hoped that not only he would get through it but everyone who has some form of cancer and I wish I had done more to help before he passed away when grade 11 was almost finished. Since then I have done shave for a cure a couple times but in the last couple years I haven’t and I very much regret not doing it, so I wanted to create something of my own that we can do right and hopefully will be a big success that will save many lives not only from the money that we raise but the awareness and education we can give to people about bowel cancer and how they can protect themselves and their loved ones.
